Data analysis and school improvement has changed my understanding of data and its importance. I learned that in order to truly make improvements you have to use data. As a school we know we need to make improvements but how? Or where do we start? In order to answer questions regarding our strengths and weaknesses we have to be able to analyze the compiled data. I also learned how to use technology tools to analyze data. In this course I became more confident in using excel to make charts and graphs after importing data. The activities in this course taught me how to systematically collect, analyze multiple sources of data and use them to: identify important needs and determine root causes of problems.
I found the data team summary the most valuable field experience. I took this very personally as I gathered information regarding my schools vision, mission and then analyzed how the data team could use data towards the schools vision. This process gave me ownership in my school and a purpose that I have not felt before. I approached this field experience with much thought and consideration. I used the school improvement plan and developed 2 teams according to our SIP needs. Those needs or in reading and math. When creating the two data teams I weighed the strengths and weaknesses of teachers as it applied to math and reading. Next, I had to think of leaders, threats and influencers and make the best combination of people to create a cohesive functioning group.
As a core X math teacher I plan to apply this learning in my school by using the data to drive my own instruction. I will work collaboratively with others to improve my teaching and student learning. I will be an influencer and a voice in promoting the use of data to drive instruction throughout our school.
