5.1 Needs Assessment
Candidates conduct needs assessments to determine school-wide, faculty, grade-level, and subject area strengths and weaknesses to inform the content and delivery of technology-based professional learning programs. (PSC 5.1/ISTE 4a)
Artifact: Individual Teacher Technology Assessment
Reflection:
I solely created the artifact, Individual Teacher Needs Assessment within the Professional Learning and Innovation course ITEC 7460. The purpose of the artifact was to analyze the coaching wants and needs of a classroom teacher before I began coaching her. Two surveys were given to assess the teacher’s knowledge of technology, the teacher’s comfortability with using technology, and the teacher’s willingness to integrate technology into her classroom. My role was to analyze the two surveys and create a coaching plan.
Standard 5.1 requires the candidate to conduct a needs assessment to determine school-wide, faculty, grade-level, and subject area strengths and weaknesses to inform the content and delivery of technology-based professional learning programs. The reflection explains how the candidate demonstrates the ability to use the needs assessment to inform the content and delivery of technology-based professional learning program. To demonstrate mastery of standard 5.1, I am using the needs assessment artifact. I conducted a needs assessment to gain knowledge of a teacher’s Levels of Technology Use. To determine the teacher’s understanding and competence with emerging and innovative educational technologies, I used an adopter survey. I used the results of the needs assessment to inform myself of my mentee’s strengths and weaknesses regarding technology. After analyzing the strengths and weaknesses, I created a coaching plan. Our first coaching session was October 3, 2018. During this session we discussed her use of technology in the classroom at a basic LoTi level one. Together we created a goal, practiced a lesson, and prepared for the lesson delivery. We meet three times but had email communication and check-in's in-between meetings. Our final meeting was November 7, 2018. I determined by the end of our coaching sessions that the teacher I was working with moved from LoTi level one to a level two and sometimes a three.
I enjoyed completing the Individual Teacher Technology Assessment and completing my first coaching experience. I was able to guide a teacher through the integration of technology in her classroom and help her develop professionally. Developing a needs assessment was beneficial in using the results to develop a plan in my coaching experience. A way to improve this experience would have been to continue coaching with the same teacher through the end of the school year, to truly assess her progress.
This artifact impacts school improvement, student learning, and professional development by allowing me to coach a co-worker to improve her teaching practices. The impact can be assessed by teacher observations and reviewing lesson plans for technology integration. The teacher and I used the partnership approach to create learning goals by reflecting on the needs of the teacher.
