3.2 Managing Digital Tools and Resources
Candidates effectively manage digital tools and resources within the context of student learning experiences. (PSC 3.2/ISTE 3b)
Artifact: ITEC 7430 Blog
Reflection:
The ITEC 7430 blog was created in ITEC 7430, Internet Tools in the Classroom. For element 3.2 “Managing Digital Tools and Resources” the blog is being used as my artifact. This artifact journals digital tools and resources I managed in my classroom and school to enhance student learning experiences at Brumby Elementary. I was the sole creator of the digital citizenship and global collaboration blog. I implemented and managed NetSmartKids, SafetyLand, Google Earth, Padlet, Quizlet, OneNote, and SlideShare just to name a few digital tools and resources.
The artifact shows my mastery of Standard 3.2 which requires me to effectively manage digital tools and resources to support student learning. This lesson plan was designed to provide me and my students with opportunities to use a variety of digital tools and resources to learn and show mastery of specific content standards. The most common digital tool I use with my students is Canvas to upload and present content and digital learning activities. My students are taught how to use this LMS beginning in third grade and are fairly proficient at it by the time they reach 6th grade. I manage the use of this digital tool through utilizing discussion boards, online submissions, and uploading digital resources for my students to use in their learning. This project also required students to use the online collaboration tool OneDrive for completing activities in groups. Animoto was introduced to the students to use as a digital tool for creating video. I was able to successfully manage the use of this digital tool by teaching them the basics and providing opportunities for them to feel safe experimenting with other features, acting as technology support when they ran into issues or needed assistance. As the culminating project, students were tasked with compiling the information they had learned into a digital resource by creating a Wikispace. This was another tool that my students were unfamiliar with, but I again successfully managed the creation of this resource through assisting with the development and any issues that arose.
Standard 3.2 Managing Digital Tools and Resources sets the expectation for candidates to effectively manage digital tools and resources within the context of student learning experiences. Evidence of mastery of standard 3.2 is seen in the ITEC 7430 blog. In this blog I describe digital tools and resources that I use and manage with my students. The first blog chronicles my lesson plan project, that required me to manage digital tools like QR codes, OneNote, Forms, and Canva to support student learning experiences. The second blog, Digital Citizenship and Global Collaboration, represents how I teach students to manage digital tools and resources responsibly. At the beginning of the school year I address internet safety and digital citizenship using Internet Safety Bingo, NetSmartKids, and Safety Land. Other examples of digital tools and resources I have managed and continue to manage to support student learning experiences can be found in the blog artifact. By creating this artifact, I learned how to manage a variety of digital resources and tools. I also learned the importance of setting your students up for success and providing them with digital citizenship awareness and skills. If I were to change anything, I would create different levels of digital citizenship that students have to review monthly.
This artifact impacted faculty development and student learning. Faculty development was impacted as teachers who were pursuing additional degrees, shared blog posts and used ideas in the blog to impact student learning. This can be assessed by surveys regarding collaboration and shared ideas.
