4.3 Diversity, Cultural Understanding & Global Awareness
Candidates model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to support diverse student needs, enhance cultural understanding, and increase global awareness. (PSC 4.3/ISTE 5c)
Artifact: Digital Citizenship and Global Collaboration Blog
Reflection:
Standard 4.3 Diversity, Cultural Understanding & Global Awareness requires candidates to model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to support diverse student needs, enhance cultural understanding, and increase global awareness. A blog, Digital Citizenship and Global Collaboration was used as the artifact for standard 4.3. I was the sole creator of this artifact and played the leading role in developing, designing, implementing and introducing the blog and the activities within the blog.
To demonstrate mastery of standard 4.3 Diversity, Cultural Understanding & Global Awareness I modeled the use of digital tools and resources to support diverse student needs, students were able to work individually or collaboratively on a Global Collaboration Project. Students also had a variety of resources available to help troubleshoot the use of digital tools and resources. Paper copies of directions, video directions, and demonstrations were done to support diverse student needs. To enhance cultural understanding, I modeled and facilitated the use of several Global Collaboration Projects (GCPs). My students had to choose at least one of the GCPs within their OneNote Family Vacation Planning Project to complete or participate in. I modeled and facilitated, the use of Google Earth, Google Tour Builder, the Amazing Race Project, and This is My Country project. These Global Collaboration Projects were chosen to enhance cultural understanding for my students. Over half of my students come from a low socioeconomic (SES) background and their opportunities to connect globally outside of the classroom are less than those who come from higher SES backgrounds. Therefore, to support diverse student needs I created opportunities for students to become more globally aware through the Global Collaboration Projects.
Completing the Global Collaboration blog post artifact was an exciting experience. I was able to incorporate global collaboration into a project-based learning activity and enhance cultural understanding while supporting the diverse needs of my students. To improve this artifact, I would I would have used more student created global collaboration projects when introducing them to my students.
This artifact impacts student learning, school improvement and professional development. Students learned how to use digital tools and resources that supported their needs as well as enhance cultural understanding. The school improvement came in the form of students from Brumby making global connections and representing our school. I was able to share my project with other teachers increasing professional development. The impact can be assessed by observation of students in technology standards and cultural understanding survey.
