3.7 Communication & Collaboration
Candidates utilize digital communication and collaboration tools to communicate locally and globally with students, parents, peers, and the larger community. (PSC 3.7/ISTE 3g)
Artifact: Brumby SeaPerch Facebook Page
Reflection:
A Brumby SeaPerch Facebook page was created as a communication and collaboration tool to communicate locally and globally with students, parents, peers and the larger community. SeaPerch is an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) club. The artifact serves as our communication tool were, we post pictures of our work and progress, share work or related topics to our mission and goals, or ask for help and resources from community members. This artifact is a collaborative effort and I play a leading role in communicating and collaborating on this platform as the club facilitator.
Element 3.7 Communication & Collaboration sets the expectation for candidates to utilize digital communication and collaboration tools to communicate locally and globally with students, parents, peers, and the larger community. Mastery of element 3.7 is demonstrated in the artifact as I use the Facebook page to as a communication tool letting parents, peers, and community members follow our progress with our SeaPerch and/or SeaPerch Course build. The SeaPerch Challenge is a series of competitions held at the local, regional, and international level. The artifact allows me to communicate locally and globally with other SeaPerch coaches and teams to collaborate on the process of building SeaPerch's and courses. I also use the Facebook page to journal our use of the Engineering Design Process. Documenting our trials, failures, discoveries encouraging input and communication from students, parents, peers and the larger community locally and globally.
Creating this artifact, I learned that there is a place for social media platforms in education. Platforms like Twitter and Facebook allow educators to communicate with students, parents, peers and the larger community with little effort. I also learned that these platforms can lead to a collaboration with people you would not have been able to reach without a social media platform. To improve the quality of this artifact I would also create a SeaPerch Twitter account. This would allow me to communicate and collaborate with similar groups and be followed by a larger community.
The work that went into creating this artifact impacted school improvement. Brumby is a Title I school. SeaPerch is a program that challenges students to us high level thinking skills, use the Engineering Design Process, problem solving, teamwork, and technical applications. The impact can be assessed the data from the science end of grade assessment (EOG).
