Reflection:
The artifact I am using for standard 5.2, Professional Learning is the Technology Workshop created in ITEC 7460 Professional Learning and Technology Innovation. The one-hour workshop was designed to support teachers in the use of technology and technology integration at Brumby Elementary School. The workshop was created by my colleagues and I to support our schools Microsoft Innovative Educator (MIE) initiative. All staff members at Brumby were required to become MIE certified. Sitting through the classes is where we saw a need for our workshop. The MIE classes were fast paced and geared towards tech savvy teachers. We saw several teachers frustrated and needing support, which created the perfect workshop opportunity for us. Together we created PowerPoint presentations, handouts, and a Weebly learning platform that aligned to state and national professional learning standards.
Standard 5.2, Professional Learning requires candidates to demonstrate the ability to develop and implement technology-based professional learning that aligns to state and national professional learning standards, integrates technology to support face-to-face and online components, models principles of adult learning, and promotes best practices in teaching, learning, and assessment. A needs assessment was designed and sent to staff members to gather information on staff needs. Approximately 30 participants returned needs assessment. We analyzed the results and developed and implemented a technology-based professional leaning workshop.
After an we analyzed the results our team determined the greatest need and want was learning how to use Forms and OneNote to support teaching, learning and assessments. The members of our team claimed roles the best fit our expertise. I created several videos on how to use OneNote. I presented the information while modeling principles of adult learning. I integrated technology, to support face-to-face and online components of the workshop. I walked teachers through creating a Microsoft Office 365 OneNote and showed them were to locate the same inform online in the form of videos that they could view at their own pace.
Creating the workshop, I learned the benefits of collaboration. My team worked together to develop and implement a technology-based professional learning. Everyone’s inpute was valued and we supported each other's strengths. I also learned that creating a workshop that is based on the needs and wants of the staff increases engagement and effectiveness. To improve the quality of this artifact next time I would offer multiple sessions: beginner, intermediate and advanced user.
This artifact impacted the school by increasing professional development and student learning. The professional development was well received because staff members felt they were heard, and the learning was relevant to their current needs. Teachers became more proficient in using Forms and OneNote. They were able to take this knowledge and create technology rich lessons and show students how to use these new tools.
