1.4 Diffusion of Innovations & Change
Candidates research, recommend, and implement strategies for initiating and sustaining technology innovations and for managing the change process in schools. (PSC 1.4/ISTE 1d)
Artifact: Action Evaluation Plan
Reflection:
An Action/Evaluation Plan was created in ITEC 7410 to recommend and implement sustaining technology innovations for managing the change process at Brumby Elementary School. Research, recommend and implement strategies were used to show mastery of element 1.4 and the artifact “Action/Evaluation Plan” is being used. To create the Action/Evaluation Plan the results of the SWOT Analysis were used and facilitated the implementing of technology use change at Brumby. The goals addressed in the Action/Evaluation Plan were skilled teacher, instructional change, student focused, diversity considerations, and school related. My individual contribution in creating this artifact led to creating a plan to implement the effectiveness of technology in my school.
This artifact demonstrates the ability to use research to recommend strategies to implement the technology skills of teachers, strategies to improve instruction, and strategies for teachers to create and implement student-centered lessons involving technology. I also addressed considerations of diversity to address the diverse population at Brumby in the Action/Evaluation Plan, and recommended technology rich lessons to address digital equity issues. These lessons would focus on engaging females and other underrepresented groups in the scope of digital equity.
Strategies I recommended to improve teacher skills and student-centered technology integrated lessons were; professional learning opportunities and weekly teacher collaboration to create technology immersed lessons. I extensively researched my schools’ school improvement plan (SIP) to support the Action/Evaluation Plan and SWOT Analysis. Implementation strategies recommended were collaboration, vertical planning and ongoing relevant professional development for teachers. A timeline was designated for managing the change process at Brumby. Indicators for success were created to measure and evaluate the change process.
Upon completion of the action evaluation plan I learned creating measurable outcomes that align with each goal is in in trickle part of the process. To set this action plan in motion I had a goal of administrators and coaches to initiate interested stakeholders to participate in a vision committee. In the timeline a budget was created as some of the goals required substitute teachers, outside trainers, or food and supplies. I utilized already scheduled teacher workdays and county planning days to reduce needed funds. Assigning responsible persons to task was key in holding people accountable for their part in the process. The action evaluation process was a part of the technology planning project, and creating the components within the project, has given me skills and knowledge technology coach should possess. What I would do differently to improve this artifact is to consult with my principle and discuss the budget for staff development instead of just using other funding sources.
The school was impacted by the work that went into creating this artifact immediately. Staff development was enhanced, and relevant and ongoing professional development was provided. Stakeholder input and participation was established and how technology expectations were emphasized. The stage was set to transition classrooms to digital learning spaces with equitable access for minority students, girls and other underrepresented populations.
