Artifact: Current Reality
Reflection:
The artifact I am using for standard 5.3 Program evaluation is the Current Reality and GSAPS of Brumby Elementary School. The artifact was created in ITEC 7460, Professional Learning and Technology Innovation. A variety of program evaluations were completed and used to develop the current reality and the Georgia School Assessment on Performance Standards (GSAPS), examining the overall effectiveness of professional learning, teacher pedagogical skills and student learning. I created my own Current Reality report from my point of view however, I worked collaboratively with co-workers and classmates to conduct interviews and complete the GSAPS.
Standard 5.3 requires candidates to design and implement program evaluations to determine the overall effectiveness of professional learning on deepening teacher content knowledge, improving teacher pedagogical skills and/or increasing student learning. To show mastery of standard 5.3 I designed a needs assessment and implemented program evaluations and determined the effectiveness of professional learning. Next, I evaluated the alignment of professional learning with the school improvement plan goals. The objective was to analyze the two to determine if the professional learning and improvement plan intended on deepening teacher content knowledge, improving teacher pedagogical skills and or increasing student learning. I then completed the GSAPS evaluating Brumby on professional learning standards.
Completing the Current Reality/GSAPS artifact was a meaningful learning experience. I enjoyed interviewing my principal and getting her perspective on the many variables in an educational setting. I have a better understanding of how professional learning chosen. Sometimes the school’s data reflects the professional learning needs, other times teacher wants are considered and finally state and county requirements are considered. To improve this artifact next time, I would talk to more stakeholders like parents and outside partners. Having this additional input would ensure my recommendations supported all stakeholders.
This artifact impacts school improvement, student learning and professional development by allowing me to share this with my team and school administration. Several people on my team are also in the ITEC program with me and we will be able to compare our perspectives regarding the needs of our school. Administrators can use the recommendations to find professional development that correlates to the data. The impact cannot be assessed immediately but in the future teacher, student and parent surveys can be given to assess professional development and its impact on student learning, teacher content knowledge and improvements on teacher pedagogical skills.
